Italian FM Rules Out Participation in Trump’s Board of Peace

(MENAFN) Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed Wednesday that Italy will not participate in US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace.

Speaking to a news channel, Tajani cited a “constitutional barrier” as the reason for Italy’s decision, while expressing willingness to contribute to reconstruction efforts in the Middle East.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni made similar remarks last month, telling a news outlet that a “constitutional incompatibility” prevents Italy from immediately joining the board during the signing ceremony. She explained that Article 11 of the Italian Constitution allows Italy to cede parts of its sovereignty only under conditions of equality among states, which she said is not the case with the Board of Peace.

The initiative was launched on Jan. 22, when representatives from 19 countries signed the Charter of the Board of Peace on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Additional countries have reportedly since joined the effort.

The first board-level meeting is scheduled to take place in Washington, DC, on Feb. 19. While attendance by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is still uncertain, the gathering will focus primarily on fundraising for the reconstruction of Gaza.
